About The Program
General English (ELICOS) is a practical language program designed to build your English skills for everyday life, further study, or work in Australia. Whether you’re starting from scratch or polishing advanced skills, this program develops your ability to read, write, speak, and listen confidently in English.
Our General English program has 4 levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Advanced. You can start at any level based on your current ability (determined by placement test) and progress through as many levels as you need. Each level runs for approximately 11-12 weeks, and you’ll attend 20 hours of face-to-face classes per week. By the time you complete the program, you’ll have the English proficiency needed for vocational training, university pathways, or professional employment in Australia.
This program is designed for international students who need to improve their English before entering VET courses, university, or the workforce. It’s practical, interactive, and focused on real communication—not just grammar rules. You’ll speak English from day one, build confidence through practice, and learn the language you’ll actually use in Australia.
WHAT YOU’LL ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO DO
General English develops the four core language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Here’s what you’ll achieve at each level:

Intermediate Level

Advanced Level

46 Weeks. 4 Levels. Real English Skills.
General English focuses on practical communication skills you’ll use in everyday life, study, and work. Each level builds on the previous one, developing your speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities systematically.
Core Focus Areas Across All Levels:
Speaking & Pronunciation
Practice speaking English through conversations, role plays, presentations, and group discussions. Learn to pronounce words clearly, use natural intonation, and speak confidently in different situations (social, academic, professional).
Listening Comprehension
Understand spoken English in various contexts—conversations, lectures, announcements, videos, podcasts. Develop strategies to identify main ideas, details, and speaker intentions. Practice listening for both general understanding and specific information.
Reading Skills
Read and understand different text types—emails, articles, instructions, stories, reports. Develop strategies to find information quickly, understand main ideas and details, build vocabulary through context, and read with better speed and comprehension.
Writing Skills
Write clearly and accurately for different purposes—emails, messages, essays, formal letters, reports. Learn paragraph structure, essay organization, grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, and appropriate tone for different audiences.
Grammar & Vocabulary
Master essential grammar structures (tenses, conditionals, passive voice, reported speech) and build vocabulary for everyday topics. Focus on accuracy and natural usage rather than memorizing rules.

Scholarships & Flexible Pricing
We offer scholarships that most other RTOs in Melbourne don’t. If you’re serious about carpentry but cost is a barrier, talk to us. We also offer payment plans to spread the $10,000 over installments.
Real Workshop, Real Tools
You’ll train in our fully equipped Williamstown carpentry workshop—not a classroom with pictures of saws. You’ll use the same tools and materials you’d find on any construction site. By the time you graduate, your hands know what to do.
Clear Process, Fast Support
From the moment you enquire to the day you graduate, you’ll know what’s happening and when. Our support team responds within 24 hours. No waiting weeks for answers. No confusing forms with no follow-up.
Visa Success for International Students
We’ve helped hundreds of international students get their COEs processed and visas approved. We know what documentation works, and we’ll walk you through it.
Pathway to VET Courses:
After completing General English at the required level, you can progress to vocational courses at Edunex:
- Complete Elementary or Pre-Intermediate → Certificate III courses (if combined with other English proof)
- Complete Intermediate or Advanced → Diploma and higher courses
Your General English completion can count toward English proficiency requirements for VET courses.
Pathway to IELTS Preparation:
Many students progress from General English (especially Intermediate or Advanced) to IELTS preparation courses if they need IELTS scores for university or professional registration.
Pathway to Work:
Strong English skills open up employment opportunities in hospitality, retail, customer service, administration, and many other fields in Australia.
Pathway to University:
Some universities accept completion of ELICOS programs (at Advanced level with high grades) as proof of English proficiency in place of IELTS for certain courses.
From Enquiry To Trade Qualification In 4 Clear Steps
Most training colleges make enrollment feel like a bureaucratic maze. We don’t. Here’s exactly what happens after you contact us:
Step 1: Get in Touch (Today)
Drop an enquiry through the form, WhatsApp us, or email. Our support team responds within 24 hours—by phone, email, or WhatsApp, depending on how you reached out. No auto-replies. Actual people.
Step 2: Check Eligibility (1-2 Days)
We'll review your documents: Year 12 results, English proficiency (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent), and ID. If something's missing or needs clarification, we'll tell you exactly what to fix. If you're borderline on English, we'll help you figure out your options.
Step 3: Secure Your Spot (3-5 Days)
Once you're eligible, you pay an initial deposit to reserve your place. International students: we process your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) so you can apply for your student visa. Domestic students: we finalize admission and send you the enrolment paperwork.
Step 4: Start Building (January or April 2026)
Show up to orientation week, meet your trainers and classmates, get your White Card safety certification, and start hands-on work in the workshop. No surprises. Just clear direction.
Note: If you’re a domestic student, the process is even faster—we skip the visa step and move straight from admission to fees to start date.
FAQs
Do I need to know any English to start?
No. Complete beginners are welcome. We have an Elementary level designed for students with little or no English. Your placement test will determine where you should start.
What's included in the $9,200 fee?
All classes (20 hours per week for 46 weeks), learning materials, placement test, progress tests, certificate of completion, and student support services. Not included: your laptop/tablet, accommodation, and personal expenses.
Can I enroll for just one level instead of the full program?
Yes. You can enroll for a single level ($2,300 for approximately 11-12 weeks). Many students start with one level to see their progress, then continue to the next level.
How do you determine which level I start at?
You'll complete a free online placement test that assesses your reading, writing, listening, and grammar. Based on your results, we'll recommend the most appropriate starting level. On your first day, teachers will also check your speaking ability to confirm placement.
Can I work while studying?
Yes. International students on a student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying ELICOS.
What if I don't have a laptop?
You'll need a laptop or tablet for some activities and homework. If cost is an issue, contact us—we may be able to help you find affordable options.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
Get in touch via enquiry form, email, or WhatsApp. We'll assess your eligibility and let you know what's available.
When can I start?
We have weekly intakes—you can start almost any Monday. However, it's best to start at the beginning of a level cycle. Main intakes are January, April, July, and October 2026. Contact us for exact start dates for your level.
Will I get a certificate at the end?
Yes. You'll receive a Certificate of Completion for each level you finish, showing the number of weeks completed and your final level achieved. This can be used as evidence of English proficiency for some VET courses and employers.
What's the difference between General English and IELTS preparation?
General English focuses on overall communication skills for everyday life, study, and work. IELTS preparation is a specialized course that trains you specifically to take the IELTS exam for university or professional registration. Most students complete General English first (especially Intermediate or Advanced) before moving to IELTS preparation.
